Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an international broadcast organization based in Washington, D.C. and Prague, Czech Republic. RFE/RL's programs -- via radio, the Internet, and television -- reach influential people in 21 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asian nations.
RFE/RL's mission is to provide accurate and reliable news and information to domestic audiences in the local language. RFE/RL broadcasts in 28 languages and attracts nearly 18 million weekly listeners and online visitors.
With more than 400 journalists, 750 freelancers, and 20 local bureaus, RFE/RL is one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world. It is funded by the U.S. Congress through the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).
RFE/RL is currently seeking a Broadcast Director for Radio Mashaal, its programming to the Pashto-speaking people of Pakistan and the Pakistani-Afghan border region. The position is based in Prague, Czech Republic.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Broadcasting, you will be responsible for program development and implementation, editorial control of radio and on-line news and current affairs content, the administration of the department’s budget and for staff performance management. You will oversee the operation of the Prague broadcast service, the Islamabad Bureau and a world-wide network of freelance reporters, ensuring that the news, current affairs and feature programs adhere to RFE/RL editorial policy, and to the highest standards of journalistic integrity and accuracy.
Qualifications:
•A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines
•Minimum of 10 years professional journalism experience including work in a fast-paced, international news organization with tight deadlines
•Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of the broadcast area, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
•Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in a news organization, including responsibility for budgeting, managing staff and resources, and organizing work processes, preferred
•Proven ability to develop, present, and implement effective and innovative solutions to complex editorial, technical and operational challenges under tight deadlines
•Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic objectivity and integrity
•Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds
•Relevant experience in one or more of RFE/RL broadcast regions
•Professional fluency in Pashto, and in English.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is seeking a well-qualified candidate to work as a Broadcaster in Radio Mashaal, our programming to the Pashtu speaking people of Pakistan and the Pakistani-Afghan border region, to initiate, develop, produce, and deliver news and feature stories from assigned materials or from original research and reporting. This position will be based in Prague, Czech Republic.
Qualifications:
•Native language fluency in Pashto.
•Advanced ability to comprehend source materials and to communicate in English
•Demonstrated writing and analytical skills with broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Afghanistan, and surrounding regions, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
•A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines highly preferred
•At least 4 years' journalism experience highly preferred
•Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic integrity and objectivity
•Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds
•Knowledge and practical experience of radio broadcasting practices and techniques is desired, but not essential
